Tweet from the PTA - December 2, 2016

The 2016 ICS International Week has just ended….wao what a week it was…loads of information, entertainment and family bonding. It was another period the distinctiveness of the ICS community was abundantly in display. We, at the PTA, are extremely proud to have had the opportunity to package the event, and witness the tremendous support throughout the week. We are indeed grateful to you all and thankful to God for His infinite mercy.

The Week was celebrated between 21st and 26th of November, 2016 under the theme ‘Entrepreneurship and Innovation’. The motivation was an International Report that stated that Nigeria is a world leader in entrepreneurial spirit however the average age of entrepreneurs in Nigeria falls between 35 and 64 years of age. We are convinced that we could start changing this narrative by exposing our kids to the right information and environment to inspire them to become creative and innovative, thereby seeking to challenge their inert skills.

On Monday, 21st of November 2016, we had the honour of receiving in our midst the Director General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and Mrs. Bukola Lawal who represented the Executive Secretary, Abuja Enterprise Development Agency (AEDA). These two Agencies explained the role of government in creating the enabling environment for industrial skill and entrepreneurial development. It was very instructive.

r world of today, to share their story with our students as well as assist in judging the Business Plan Development competition. We are indeed grateful for the good insights shared by Adaeze Soekan, Irene Bangwell and Chigozie Okeke. Our kids also contributed immensely to the success of the morning with their incisive and thoughtful business plan. Permit me to congratulate our star price winners – 1 st Position: David, Jessica, Omar and Anne-Marie; 2 nd Position: Tobe and Hannah; 3 rd Position: Imaan, Ezzat and Precious.

The day got better. In the evening, the parents and teachers gathered for our annual Parents Teachers Dinner. It was an awesome evening well spiced with delicious intercontinental dishes, karaoke presentation (oh…Mrs. Fabusoye), Live Band playing the old and current tunes and …did I mention dancing…..it was an awesome evening…we all had fun and made new friends. We want to say a big thank you for all the 150 people who made it to the Dinner, and we appreciate those that wanted to come and couldn’t; next year is just around corner. The pictures from the Dinner are available for sale; please contact the Administrative Office for your copy at N200 per copy.

The Week’s celebration went further, on Thursday we had the College Fair/Embassy Day with the Republics of Ireland and France in attendance. These two countries showcased the opportunities available for our kids to study in their respective countries. We want to say a big thank you to Mr. Eoghan McSwiney, the Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Republic of Ireland, and Saranne Comel, Programme Officer for Promotion of French, the French Embassy for taking out time to be with us.

On the same day, we had the privilege to receive one of Nigerian greats; a one-time national football team coach, an Olympic Silver Medalist, a Silver and Bronze Medalist from the Confederation of Africa Cup of Nations and a National Award Recipient, Coach Samson Siasia. He shared his time as a footballer and the need for the kids to take their academic serious while keeping an eye on their sporting ambition.

The Elementary and Early Years weren’t left out the infor-tainment. There was the Career Show. The Early Year kids dressed up in their dream professions – Fire Fighters, Soldiers, Doctors, Nurses, etc. We also had the honour of one of our own Mrs. Halima Mijindadi sparing time to interact with the kids.

ICS International Week would be incomplete without the Saturday Fanfare! It was a day out of this world. Our parents were simply awesome! We can’t thank you all enough for your contributions toward the success of the day; the delicious delicacies that were freely prepared, and from which the PTA was able to raise some good cash.
How can I forget the ICS Talent Hunt….wao what a display by our kids, and congrats to the winners. The water slide …..the children had fun and we are extremely grateful for the safety we enjoyed.

I can’t end this piece without appreciating the wonderful support we received from the entire School Community; School Management Team, the Teaching Staff, the Support Staff and most importantly, the Parents; we are indeed very grateful. The entire week was indeed a showcase of the uniqueness of the ICS Community!
Thank you all and we would continue to count on your support.

2016/17 Academic Session

TWEETS FROM THE PTA - Jan 15, 2016

It is a pleasure to welcome everyone back from the short break. I would also use this opportunity to wish each and every one a Happy and Prosperous New Year. We are all expectant that this year 2016 would be a year of better and improved socio-economic environment where our kids can learn and exhibit their skills in more conducive and safer environment.

We would like to appreciate the cooperation the PTA Executive received from the School’s Management, Teachers and the Parents since we assumed office; we are indeed very delighted about the prospect of building on this growing comradeship.

The 3rd Quarter of 2015/16 Session has begun in earnest, and am sure our kids have tuned-in for the rigours of the academic as well as excited towards the various extra-curricular activities embedded in the Quarter. I sincerely also hope that we, the Parents, are re-energized towards supporting the aspiration of these wonderful leaders of tomorrow.

Permit me to acknowledge the commitment of the School’s Management towards improving the ambience in and leading to the School as well as the learning facilities available. We are indeed delighted to note the improved access road as well as the gym.

As it is customary of the PTA, we are also going to be involved in a number of activities/project(s) within the Quarter, and in time we shall roll out the time schedule of these activities and also seek out your support towards the execution of the project(s). We implore all of us to be ready to ride along with us when these activities/project(s) do come up.

Once again, I wish us all a safe and prosperous 2016.

Tweet from the PTA - November 4, 2016

The 2016 ICS International Week is scheduled to hold between the 21st and 26th of November, 2016 under the theme ‘Entrepreneurship and Innovation’. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), young people are more likely to have fresh ideas, and are most likely to receive better education than their parents. The GEM 2012 report on Nigeria showed that the country is a world leader in entrepreneurial spirit. However, the report also said that the average entrepreneur in Nigeria is older, with 60% falling between 35 and 64 years of age. It is therefore high time that this statistics is reversed if we are to become globally competitive as a nation.

The objective of the Week is to highlight the various platforms through which our children can sharpen their skills into productive ventures. We have therefore taken care to invite national enterprise and skill development agencies, embassies as well as private organisations and personalities to come and interact with our students with a view to motivating them, and possibly taken them on as mentees.

During the Week we have also created a platform for College Fairs for some overseas colleges to come and showcase their schools to us on our campus. We are also having career talks. We would therefore implore professionals among the parents (Lawyers, Doctors, Pilots, Engineers, etc) who are willing to interact with the kids across the ages to place contact us through Mrs. Silvia Okeke on 0803-444-7797 or email osaig22@yahoo.com.

The Parents Teachers Dinner would hold on Wednesday 23rd November, 2016. This is a platform for us all to interact under a more relaxed environment. Preparations are in top gear to ensure that the evening is a memorable one.

On the final day, 26th of November, 2016, we shall celebrate the international diversity of our School with the display of the different cultures that makes our School truly an International School. We plan to have the Inter-continent Net Ball Competition. We expect the day to be an exciting one and we look forward to your active participation. Again we implore you to please save these dates.

The Chrome book bags are now in the store. Five thousand Naira (N5,000) only. Please ensure your child’s copy of the Chrome book is adequately protected.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I look forward to your continued support as we perfect our plans for this year’s ICS International Week. Thank you.

The Second Quarter is usually filled with activities notably, the International Week and End of Year activities as part of the PTA engagements. We have already commenced preparations towards these activities. The International Week will be held between the 21st and 26th of November, 2016. During this week, we intend to bring individuals/organisations that will engage with the students and pass on information that will both educate and entertain. On the final day, 26th of November, 2016, we shall celebrate the international diversity of our School with the display of the different cultures that makes our School truly an International School. Please do save these dates.

As is customary, we are eagerly looking forward to the visit of the Santa Claus! Already arrangements are in top gear to welcome this wonderful guest who brings us ‘good tidings of great joy to all men’.

The School is gradually upgrading its teaching and learning mechanism with the acquisition and distribution of the Chrome Books to the Middle and High School Students. It is important we ensure maximum utilisation of this facility by our kids and strict adherence to the rules and regulations as set by the School for the use of these Notebook computers. In order to protect them, the PTA Store has procured customised protective pouches for sale. The sale price is five thousand naira (N5,000) only for one. There are limited quantities.

Thank you.

Tweet from the PTA - August 26, 2016

It is a pleasure to welcome all to the new academic year – 2016/17 session. It is indeed a privilege to welcome all the new families to the greater ICS Family. We are so glad you have chosen our school as your preferred choice for cultivating the academic accomplishments of your children or ward. To the returning families, it gives us great joy to see you back looking bright and refreshed following the long and well deserved summer break.

Last year, the PTA set out to accomplish a number of projects; we were encouraged that with your help and support, we completed a few, while others remain works in progress. We will again this year be counting on your support to complete the outstanding projects and begin some new ones.

At the PTA, we are aware that the School Administration has improved on the academic curriculum of the school. The changes made aim at broadening the scope of learning and knowledge and skills acquisition of our students. In so doing, it is the expectation that they would be better prepared not only to actualize their academic dreams but improve their competitiveness on the global stage. We look forward to learning about our students’ great accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom as individuals and under the ICS banner.

Once again, on behalf of the Executives, I welcome you all to the new academic year 2016-2017; I believe with our families rallying together in cooperation, we can lift ICS to even greater heights this year. Onwards and upwards ICS Family

Tweet From the PTA - Dec 2, 2015 International week

Building upon the tradition of International Day celebration, the ICS PTA 2015/2016 hosted the first ICS International Week celebration, which has now has come and been; what a full week it was. It was a week that lived up to its Theme of “DIVERSITY: AN OPEN ACCESS TO DYNAMIC EDUCATION”. The adjectives Diverse and Dynamic certainly applied to the activities that peppered the week. The PTA would like to thank the extensive and resourceful ICS Parent network for being a mine of knowledge, expertise, ideas and networking facilitation leading up to and making the Week-long celebrations possible.

In brief, the celebrations started prior to the 23rd November 2015, and we would like to specially thank the Mexican Ambassador for his gracious invite to the Mexican photo exhibition at the International Exhibition Centre which was attended by our fine arts and photography students and their respective teachers. Kicking off on Monday, 23rd November 2015, the School hosted Cassava Republic Press through the week of the International Week, where they set up a stand outside the library area. The intention of the Cassava Republic Book fair was to showcase African writers and expose our School Learner Community to the richness of African writing. The PTA would like to thank Cassava Republic Press for the donation of books to the ICS library following the book fair.

On Tuesday Mrs. Azuka Menkiti, an Education Specialist from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) visited our school and interacted with the Middle and High School students about the engagement of UNICEF in Nigeria and around the world. Wednesday was the turn of Mrs. Ciara Roche, an Irish National, who read an Irish folk story to the Early Years and gave the Elementary School a talk about the Republic of Ireland. Earlier that morning, Mr. Timothy Curtin of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) gave a talk to the Elementary, Middle and High Schools about the USAID and its engagement globally and particularly, in Nigeria.

Thursday was the turn of the Australian High Commission’s Mr. Matthew Mehan who engaged with the Elementary, Middle and High School students about Australia as a country, her history, trade relations with Nigeria, and most importantly, educational facilities on offer in the country. The Week was wound up with a visit from Mr. Linus Ogolla, the Trade Counsel from the Kenya High Commission. He shared a presentation about Kenya and had an interactive question and answer session with the Elementary, Middle and High School. On the same day (Friday), the Village Weaver’s Network set up a demonstration in the Gym of the mat weaving.

The PTA would like to thank and congratulate the entire ICS Student body from Early years through to Grade 12 for displaying excellent qualities as interactively, curious, highly engaged and enthusiastic young people who flew the School’s flag high. All the visiting speakers were very impressed with the level of engagement and critical analysis our students displayed.

On a social note, Thursday evening was also the Parents’ and Staff Dinner. It was a delightful evening out, to all those parents and staff who were in attendance; thank you for making it a sparkling night of fun and culture. We got to taste cuisine from the five continents, we were entertained by a martial arts display, auctioned off some lovely art pieces created by ICS students and had fun with the general knowledge quiz… during which a very healthy spirit of competition in our school community was noted. Deserving special mention are Table 11 (the winners of the night) and Table 16 (a very close runner up), well done all who avidly took part in the general knowledge quiz. We would also like to congratulate the students of Grade Five Blue who had the highest number of representation at the Dinner; they consequently won for themselves a Pizza Party!

The Week was crowned off with the International Day Celebration which was an assortment of performances from the School Community and an international food court as well as a market of vendors which allowed for our School Community and friends to beat the Christmas rush and get their Christmas gifts from the diverse goods on sale. Deserving special mention during the performances are: A beautiful piano performance by Dhrupad Mahanta; The African Dance Club; The Dance Club; The Taekwondo Club; The Violin Club; The Indian Dancers; Mr. Johnson of the Dance Club; The Talking Drummers and African Dancers; Abuja International Choir, and All vendors and families who took part in the International Day celebration, without all of you, the splendor of the day would not have been so bright.

The PTA would like to thank everyone that contributed towards the success of the day, Mrs. Okpanachi, the School’s Superintendent, for being the ‘Reserved’ ICS PTA Central Bank Governor; Mrs. Silvia Mahtani (Financial Controller), Miss. Emem Akpabio (Head of Sales Team); Mrs. Miranda Nwadeyi for her excellent MC skills, and Mr. Godfrey for being a great world music DJ.

The School was a bustle of activity this past week and this would not have been possible without the impeccable operation and coordination by our School Management Team (Mrs. Okpanachi, Kehinde, Jonathan, and Ovie); the School Administration Department, all Teachers, Support Staff (Cleaning, Gardening, Maintenance and Security Departments); the PTA would like to thank you immensely for your invaluable support throughout the week.

We, as a School had fun, made new friends, established new partnerships and built on existing ones, and most importantly, we have expanded the knowledge space of the students. Well done PTA Executive and Organising Team for having met the thematic brief. On behalf of the Executive and the Organising Team, I wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who made time out to attend, and even joined in organizing the events. We are indeed most grateful to all.

On the back of this successful celebration of diversity and in the spirit of cooperation, the Executive will be looking at ways through which the School network capacity and resources can be harnessed to further expand the knowledge space of our students. We will therefore be reaching out to you, our School family as we hone this and future programme(s) in this direction.

We use this medium to invite all Parents to visit the PTA Office (by the Early Years Building) to pick up the School’s branded T-Shits, Cups, Writing Pens, Bumper Stickers, and Gift bags; available at attractive rates. The Dinner pictures and compact disc (CD) on the Saturday event are also available for pick up at a price. Please contact the PTA or Administrative Office.

It is the yuletide season, allow me on behalf of the PTA Executive 2015/2016 to wish each and every family a Merry Christmas celebration and abundance of peace and wholeness in 2016. The joy of the Season shall be lasting in our homes.

Merry Christmas and a blessed 2016.

From the PTA Chair 2015/2016 Academic Session

Let me start, on behalf of the PTA Executive for the 2015/16 Academic Session, appreciate the privilege you have given us to serve you in bringing better cooperation between the School’s Management, the Parents, Teachers and, indeed, the entire ICS community. We are honoured and have committed ourselves, individually and collectively, to serve in truth and dignity.

The academic year has begun, and most interestingly one quarter has run by. As your Executive, we have lined up a number of activities through the year; we sincerely feel that these activities would engage the entire School body, and most importantly bring the diversity of the Parents to bear positive impacts on the socio-educational development of our children. Throughout the course of the academic year, I shall, as much as possible, interact with you through this means and every other opportunity I can lay my hands on, however, I would like you to note that I am not alone; I have a very committed team working with me. Let me say a big appreciation to parents that took out time to attend the joint meeting of the PTA and the School’s Board; it was an eventful meeting, far reaching decisions were reached and surely we missed the good company of our members that were unable to attend.

I am glad to report that work has began on the water purification project; water samples have been taken and we are awaiting the report which would define the system to be installed. We also expect this to come with cost implications. I would continue to keep us posted on the progress.

Let me also report that the School is taking all precautions to ensure utmost safety within and outside the School’s compound. We would continue to engage the School to make sure decisive measures are put in place, proactively, forestall security breach. We would however encourage all of us to continue to cooperate with the School in keeping our kids safe.

On the immediate horizon is the School’s Sport Day; March 10, 2017. The National Stadium is the venue and I am using this medium to call on all Parents to mark down the date and let’s come out in our numbers to support our kids. The PTA Secretariat has procured Parents’ Support T-Shirts to add colour and glamour to the day. Let me say a big thank you to all parents that made out time to support the students at the Athletics Festival held on Tuesday, March 8th, 2016; it was indeed a glorious occasion. At the last PTA Meeting, three Committees were constituted – the Student/Academic Liaison, Sports and 2016 ICS Summer Fiesta. I want to appreciate the members of these Committees for committing themselves to serve in improving the interactions of the PTA with the School as well as contribute towards the academic, social and physical education of our children.
